funny people

so i like to think i’m a bit funny; you might even say, a funny person. but after seeing this movie, i realized being a funny person also involves being an asshole. and having sex with women while making mermaid sounds. that isn’t me, unless i was actually having sex with a mermaid. then the noise might be appropriate, and i may relent.

funny people is a drama that mixes in humor. i say drama first, because there are long lulls where there’s no laughing. not even a chuckle. that said, sometimes they put in some humor, in the drama, and the juxtaposition makes it awesome. the periods of humor in the movie, when they do come, are also quite enjoyable. i laughed at lot at those points.

this movie runs 2 hours and 30 minutes long. you’re probably thinking, how could they produce so much funny? the answer is: they didn’t. it was too long, and that was a bad thing. the parts that were funny were pretty good, though i didn’t like that seth rogan defaulted to sex jokes a lot, which to me is a bit like shooting fish in a barrel. sure, you can do it, but then your fish have lead in them and you can’t eat them. also, barrels don’t stop bullets. where does that expression even come from?

i have seen all but two of judd apatow’s movies; i’m not going to tell you which two i missed. i will say, out of all i’ve seen, i loved superbad. that was it. i kind of, sort of, liked a few others, but there was no love. i also have not been a big fan of seth rogan. all in all i tend to summarize apatow et al. as “meh.” however, in this movie i liked seth rogan. i also liked this apatow movie the most next to superbad, which is untouchable. you can’t touch it.

jonah hill being in this movie was also a pleasant surprise. his performance was excellent. i enjoy him and his humor.

i give this movie a 4.8/7. if they cut it down to 1 and a half hours, i think they’d have a real winner.
